It’s my favourite time of year, where the final summer sale reductions are coming in thick and fast and stores are winding up their summer sales. This is when you can really grab a bargain, but you have to be strategic, otherwise you’ll end up with things in your wardrobe that will give you the ‘what was I thinking’ feeling in six months’ time! So here’s my sale shopping guide and some of the items I will be adding to my basket sharpish!
Sale Shopping Guide – Replacements
So firstly, I consider any items that have worn out and need replacing. Basics like white t-shits, vests and camisoles fall in to this category. I like to buy high quality basics that last a bit longer but I also don’t want to spend too much on them.
Sale Shopping Guide – Key Items
Then it’s on to jeans, knits and more expensive items that might be missing from my wardrobe. This is the time to buy the white jeans that are missing from your wardrobe as they are a fab transitional autumn pant but can be kept in the wardrobe until spring too. These Whistles ones are all perfect and almost half price find them here.
Sale Shopping Guide – Dresses and Occasion Wear
Dresses, occasion wear and any events I have scheduled is my next consideration. Pretty summer dresses are very affordable at the end of the sale. I have been known to purchase a dress for a wedding a year in advance if it looks good and is the right price.

This black & white check jumpsuit is linen and has a lovely crossover style. Big bonus it has pockets! Find it here.
Sale Shopping Guide – Shoes and Accessories
Finally, its shoes and accessories. Trainers are often heavily reduced at the end of the summer, but I wear them all year so buying them now just makes sense. Also leather bags can be a great thing to purchase. I have bought many of my staple plain leather bags in the sale, highly reduced.
This Whistles canvas bag is an absolute bargain, great as a gym bag or beach bag but also good to use on a daily basis for carrying your laptop. Find it here.
This Whistles pink purse is a nice classic wallet, that will last a long time. Find it here
Veja are the trainers of the moment, but on the pricey end. The canvas ones are the budget friendly version and Flannels have them in the sale. I bought the black ones and am very happy with them! Find them here… Wata (black) or Nova (white & black) or Nova (white & red)
Sale Shopping Guide – Brands to shop
I like to look at a few brands in the sales as they tend to reduce their stock quite heavily and they make high quality garments that last. My favourites to shop are Hush and Whistles, I have a coat from Whistles that is 12 years old and still fabulous! Both are also available on John Lewis so it’s worth looking around if your size isn’t in stock.
John Lewis have just reduced some of their branded stock this week s0 go take a look here
Mila Textured Casual Jumpsuit £65.
I love this. Rust is a great classic colour, which will work right through autumn. Layer it with a white t-shirt and wear with trainers for a warmer outfit or as is with sandals on your holidays. Find it here.
Whistles Jungle Leopard Print Utility Shirt Dress £49
This dress looks great on. Worn with red accessories it would make a great winter wedding outfit or pair it with trainers and a leather jacket for a weekend look. Find it here.
Mari Heart Wide Leg Trouser £38
I have bought this trouser style before and wore then so much the print faded. They are great as you can wear in winter with tights and boots and the rest of the year with sandals/trainers for warmer days. Find it here.
Breton Stripe Square Neck Top £20
Stripes are always a great buy; they will never go out of fashion and a Breton style top will always be a great investment. Here is my favourite…Breton Top
Check Trench Coat £145
A classic trench coat that will never date is a great sale purchase. This is a lovely grey/beige colour and the check is a great detail that will not date the coat in the long term. If I needed a trench, I would buy this gem without hesitation. Find it here.
Cotton Knit £39
I tried this on yesterday and immediately bought it. Cotton and lightweight meaning it is breathable. A lovely pastel colour which will work in the summer and in the spring, I am wearing at the moment too. Find it here.
So that’s it, my sale shopping guide. I rarely buy items full price; I love to get more for less and buying my basics from great brands at lower prices fits with my Yorkshire frugalness. If you use these tips you will never have to pay full price, unless you want to, of course!
