Masks and skincare treatments to do at home

At home face mask

I don’t know about you but since lockdown started my routines have been off and I’ve either confused or focused. I’m in need of some pampering so I’ve put together this at home face mask post.

As my usual routines have gone AWOL and I feel a bit lack lustre, I decided this week that I’m going to dedicate at least one night a week to self-care and start by getting back to basics with my skincare.

So, I’m going to cleanse, tone, moisturise and get back into masking. I was doing pretty well at regularly using treatments to improve my skin but that all disappeared when this funny pause period happened.

At home face mask – Usual Suspects

Clearing and clarifying – Turmeric Mask

I use this to help when my skin flares up or breaks out, usually a week before my period. It helps to take the anger out of my skin and makes it look less red.

The one I use I found in TK Max but this Khiels one is supposed to be excellent if you’re after a recommendation.

Moisturising and nourishing – Elemis Superfood Vital Veggie Mask

I love this mask, feels lovely on the skin and when I remove it my skin feels fresh and soft. I have had it for 6 months now and still have half left. It lasts ages and you don’t need much when you apply it.

Physical Exfoliant – Never a Dull Moment Origins

I have used this for years, discovering it when I worked at House of Fraser. I love the thickness, smell and the way my skin feels after I’ve used it. I am nearly out of this, but will be buying a new one as soon as I need it, I can’t be without it!

Chemical Exfoliant – Glycolic Acid

I have long loved Pixi Glow Tonic, enjoying the smell, feel of the texture of my skin after using and the way it makes my skin glow. I have however found this, that I think is a strong contender and more purse friendly – Revolution Skincare 5% Glycolic Acid Toner. It’s strong so if you haven’t used a glycolic acid don’t start with this one, but if you’re a pixi user and want something half the price, give this a go.

Homemade masks

I know getting getting some things delivered is difficult or you want to make the most of what you already have so here are some homemade alternatives to buying new products.

Please do a patch test on your forearm and wait 24hrs before trying anything on your face. These homemade masks are fine on my face but could cause irritation on other people.

Clearing and clarifying – Turmeric Mask

  1. Mix 1tsp turmeric with the same quantity of honey and a little water to loosen it.
  2. Mix with water and add a little flour to thicken it.

Apply to the skin and leave for 15 mins or until dried out. Wash off and pat dry gently with a clean towel.

Moisturising and nourishing –  Avocado & Yoghurt

1/3 avocado
2 tablespoons of yogurt
1 teaspoon of honey

Mix and leave on the skin for 10-15 mins, rinse and pat dry gently.

Physical Exfoliant – Oats & Honey

2 tbsp oats

1 tsp Honey

1 tsp water

Mix and apply in gentle circular movements. Leave to sit on the skin for 15 mins and wash off with a muslin cloth. Pat dry.

Toner Exfoliant – Green tea

Brew a cup of green tea, allow to cool and using a cotton pad wipe over the skin. You can add apple cider vinegar and or lemon if you want extra astringent power.
